Postdoctoral Researcher - Robotics: Dynamics and Control of Fusion Reactor Maintenance Systems
Duration: 20-month position starting May 1st, 2026 or as soon as possible
About the Role
Join the Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering in an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in robotics and fusion reactor technology. This postdoctoral position focuses on the dynamics and control of robotic handling and maintenance systems for fusion reactors as part of the EUROfusion program.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with remote handling and maintenance partners within the EUROfusion program
- Develop dynamics and control solutions for robotic handling and maintenance of breeding blankets and other core fusion reactor components
- Participate in project meetings, write technical reports, and conduct R&D activities
- Work closely with EUROfusion partners under the supervision of Xuping Zhang
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Robotics with strong experience in dynamics and control or related field
- Expertise in dynamic modeling and control systems
- Experience with experimental setup and testing
- Knowledge of Digital Twin and Machine Learning applications
- Strong publication record
- Excellent collaboration and management skills
- Outstanding communication abilities
- Hands-on technical skills and programming experience
Research Environment
You'll join the robot design and control team led by Xuping Zhang, dedicated to advancing robotic interaction and manipulation with applications in manufacturing, inspection, and remote maintenance. The team has been actively developing robotic systems for DEMO breeding blanket maintenance in collaboration with key EU fusion partners.
