Crew Manager – Maritime Operations

12-Month Contract (Full-Time) | Possibility of Extension

Location: The successful candidate may be based within one of the following Greenpeace National/Regional Organisations (NROs): Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland, or the Netherlands. Candidates based in other locations with existing independent Greenpeace National/Regional Organisations may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to hosting capacity and compliance requirements. Please note that hosting availability cannot be guaranteed in every location prior to full assessment.

Internal Greenpeace network candidates from NROs (not current GPI staff) will also be considered on a case-by-case basis, and every effort will be made to explore possibilities for qualified candidates across the GP network.

About the Role

Greenpeace International is seeking an experienced and motivated Crew Manager to join its Operations department on an initial 12-month contract. In this pivotal role, you will ensure that Greenpeace's fleet of ships is suitably and strategically staffed to meet operational, technical, and campaign requirements at all times. Acting as the central point of contact for all crew-related matters, you will oversee workforce planning, recruitment, logistics, training, HR policy compliance, and emergency support — working collaboratively across GPI and its global network of NROs.

Responsibilities

Ship Crewing and Recruitment

• Ensure all Greenpeace vessels are appropriately staffed in line with operational, technical, and campaign requirements, coordinating with relevant stakeholders across GPI and NROs
• Lead and manage end-to-end recruitment for all maritime roles, adhering to established hiring practices and GPI People & Culture (P&C) policy
• Review and assess crew profiles and qualifications to match contractual, regulatory, and campaign-specific requirements
• Maintain and develop a pipeline of qualified maritime professionals to support ongoing and future crewing needs

Crew Logistics

• Ensure all crew members hold valid and up-to-date documentation, certifications, and medical clearances required for travel and work assignments
• Coordinate timely communication to crew regarding embarkation and disembarkation schedules, keeping all parties informed of any changes
• Manage all crew travel logistics, including arrangements for departmental staff travelling to vessels
• Oversee accurate record-keeping for crew documentation and travel in compliance with applicable regulations

Crew HR Management, Maritime Training, and Policy Alignment

• Oversee onboard HR management processes and ensure alignment with GPI P&C policies and procedures
• Provide guidance and support to Captains in addressing and resolving personnel matters in accordance with the Crew Unit Code of Conduct, seagoing personnel HR policies, Dutch labour law, international maritime regulations, and JEDIS (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Sustainability) principles
• Escalate complex or sensitive personnel issues to the Head of Crew as appropriate
• Identify crew training needs and support the development and implementation of maritime training programmes and career development pathways
• Monitor compliance with mandatory maritime certifications and regulatory requirements

Networks and Communications

• Keep crew regularly informed of relevant organisational updates, campaign developments, and assignment details
• Liaise proactively with campaign, actions, and operations teams to communicate crew changes and manage project-specific staffing requirements
• Build and maintain relationships with crewing departments in other NGOs, certified maritime agencies, and training institutions to support recruitment, regulatory compliance, and workforce development

Emergency Support

• Support the Head of Crew by maintaining clear visibility of staff availability and providing emergency support to seagoing personnel as and when required

Requirements

• Extensive HR experience, including engagement within international organisations
• Demonstrable experience working with non-governmental and/or campaigning organisations
• Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to operate effectively within international, multicultural environments
• Hands-on experience in ship crewing, manning, and maritime personnel management
• Sound understanding of ship crewing requirements, international conventions, regulations, and professional certification frameworks
• Working knowledge of Dutch labour law and relevant employment regulations
• Ability to perform calmly and effectively in a high-pressure, fast-moving environment
• A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset with the willingness to take initiative and personal responsibility
• Experience in budget management and familiarity with crew
