The postdoctoral positions consist of 24 months of employment and have no teaching obligation. The intended start date is 1 April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. About the ModelFutures project The two positions form part of the research project “Modelling African Futures: A comparative technography of evidence-based welfare policy in Ghana, Senegal, Kenya and Botswana” (ModelFutures) funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant. ModelFutures is located at the intersection of African Studies, anthropology, STS, and population statistics. The project undertakes comparative ethnographic research at the nexus of four African statistical and welfare systems – Ghana, Senegal, Kenya and Botswana – where the design, production and application of innovations in population statistics participate in shaping the future of public welfare. The aim of the project is to connect statistical innovation and anticipatory welfare politics in contexts of major demographic transitions. The Research Unit for Robophilosophy and Integrative Social Robotics (RISR), School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for an 18-month postdoctoral position in social/assistive robotics. The appointment begins on February 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. Place of work will be Aarhus University, Jens Chr. Skous Vej 7, 8000 Aarhus C. The university sets great store by its staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified applicants regardless of their personal background. Research context The position is offered in the context of the research project “Enabling Social Interiors: Innovating Design in Assistive Robotics (DARE)”. DARE is an interdisciplinary project in social (assistive) robotics where Humanities research is fully included: the project combines philosophical expertise (social ontology, social phenomenology, axiology, ethics), anthropological field research, and constructive design research. With focus on assistive robotics for independent living of older adults, the DARE project will investigate the complex interplay between the dynamics of value hierarchies (e.g., autonomy vs. dignity), self-conceptions in aging, and robot appearance. Drawing on these insights and recent design studies of shape-changing objects, we introduce a new design category, “enabling social interiors”, and investigate how it can support positive conceptions of aging. The project is relevant for the physical and kinematic design of social robots in general, since it investigates the contextual relationship between value experience, social cues in robotic movements, and acceptance of robots. The relationship between ‘design spaces’ and user values currently constitutes an important research gap in assistive robotics. The DARE project will address this relationship by way of design-centered approach that draws on the unique conceptual and methodological resources of ISR (Integrative Social Robotics), a R&D paradigm for culturally sustainable social robotics as developed at the research unit RISR. (Background information on ISR is provided at the project’s webpage). DARE will also benefit from close collaborations with the ACUTE project (link) which explores the new design category of artifact inspired robots experimentally. The position We are looking for an innovative young researcher with a disciplinary specialization in (social/assistive) robotics and, ideally, some experience with collaborations with interaction designers using design methods. The successful applicant will have strong research skills in social robotics: synthetic research, including the building of prototypes, and empirical research (quantitative and qualitative methods). The applicant is expected to work productively in an interdisciplinary team. Other researchers of the DARE team will determine interactional profiles for value experience and sociality experiences. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to collaborate with a researcher in interaction design, who will use explore user expectations and contextual values by means of a constructive design approach using design probes and interviews. The successful applicant shall investigate, supported by the interaction design researcher, which physical and kinematic designs of robotic items can support these interactional profiles, testing them with mockups or partial prototypes. The successful applicant will work closely with the three lead researchers of the project, Professor Johanna Seibt (RISR, philosophy), Associate Professor Majken Kierkegaard Rasmussen (Digital Design, Interaction Design research program ), and Docent Christina Vestergaard (VIA Research Center for Health and Society, RISR, anthropology). The place of work will be the interdisciplinary research unit RISR, but the postdoctoral researcher will also have access to staff and facilities of the Department of Digital Design and Information Studies (DDINF), such as local prototyping facilities. Teaching, supervision, knowledge exchange The position is primarily research-based, but it will also involve a small degree of teaching and supervision. To that end, the successful applicant will be expected to take part in the teaching activities of the research unit RISR, especially the supplementary subject Humanistic Technology Development. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in English or Danish. The successful applicant will be expected to exchange knowledge with various sectors of society and to contribute actively to public debate in areas related to the position. Qualifications Applicants for this position must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in interaction design. Applicants should upload a full CV as well as a statement of motivation (1 page). Applicants must document: an international research profile showing high academic productivity high proficiency in design (including prototyping) of robotic objects research background in HRI (social or assistive robotics) fluency in written and spoken English optional: experience with collaborative research in interdisciplinary research groups The research activities will be evaluated in relation to the actual research time. We therefore encourage applicants to specify any periods of leave they may have had without research activities (e.g. maternity/paternity leave), so we can subtract these periods from the span of their academic career when evaluating their productivity. Please upload a maximum of two publications alongside your application. Only submitted publications will be assessed; a list of publications is not sufficient. As a result, applications without submitted publications will not be assessed. Shortlists may be prepared with the candidates that have been selected for a detailed academic assessment. A committee set up by the head of school is responsible for selecting the most qualified candidates. See this link for further information about shortlisting at the Faculty of Arts: shortlisting Professional references or recommendations should not be included. Københavns Universitet
The Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Indo-European Studies from 1 April 2026. The position is a fixed-term position for 20 months. Introduction The collective research project The Indo-European Dark Ages Illuminated, funded by VELUX FONDEN, aims to reconstruct the cultural vocabulary – words referring to technologies (e.g. the wheel) and socioeconomic phenomena (e.g. dowry) – of the IE “Dark Ages”, the poorly lit period between the dissolution of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) and the emergence of the individual daughter branches. The semantic fields treated in the project are (1) clothing and textiles, (2) metals and metal production, (3) animal husbandry, (4) agriculture, (5) foods and utensils, (6) social structure and jurisdiction, (7) religious practices, (8) warfare, (9) transport, (10) economy and commerce, (11) construction and buildings. After compiling a comprehensive database of vocabulary items across the IE branches, the project members carry out a computer-assisted phylogenetic analysis to determine the minimal age of each vocabulary item. Since the vocabulary is indicative of the culture of the speakers of a language, the project will lead to new insights, based on historical linguistic evidence, into the cultural and technological stages and transitions in western Eurasia at the dawn of history. It thus corroborates the thriving cross-pollination between historical linguistics, archaeology and historical population genetics. Duties and Responsibilities The position will be heavily weighted in favour of research. In addition, a certain amount of teaching may also be required. Other duties may be required to a limited extent. The university determines the exact ratio between the various responsibilities. The ratio may vary over time. The postdoc is expected to collect and assure the quality of data from the Anatolian and Tocharian branches, generally assumed to be the first branches to split off and therefore potentially contributing indispensable information on the oldest linguistic layers. The postdoc coauthors one article and writes two articles independently. The papers could concern semantic fields for which the position of Anatolian and/or Tocharian in the family tree has been argued to be of significance (e.g. on terms for clothing and textiles in non-Anatolian Indo-European). The candidate is expected to collaborate closely with the other members of the Dark Ages project, to participate in group meetings at the Roots of Europe research centre and to integrate with the research group Language History. Applicants are invited to familiarise themselves with the the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics. Qualification requirements and assessment criteria The applicant should have or be about to receive a PhD degree in Indo-European Studies or a related field and must possess skills in written and spoken academic English at a high level. Reading proficiency in German is a requirement. Furthermore, it is an advantage if the applicant has knowledge of computational linguistic phylogenetics and its relation to traditional subgrouping methodologies, as well as a basic knowledge of questions pertaining to the correlation of linguistic, archaeological and genetic evidence. Applicants will primarily be assessed in relation to their research qualifications, including their publications, ability to conduct independent research and participate in research collaborations, and their experience of research management. In addition, the applicant’s research plan and research potential will be assessed in relation to the overall project as described above. Teaching qualifications are not a requirement, but documented teaching experience can be included in the overall assessment. More information on careers at UCPH and the requirement for the different academic positions is available on: Career at The University of Copenhagen – University of Copenhagen (ku.dk) For more about postdoc positions and qualification requirements, see the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities: Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (ufm.dk). Applications may be written in English or Danish and must include the following attachments: 1. Letter of motivation 2. CV 3. Documentation of qualifications (exam certificates and PhD diploma) 4. Complete publication list (attached publications must be marked with an asterisk). The list must be structured systematically and divided into the following categories: Peer-reviewed publications: Monographs and anthologies Articles in journals Book chapters/anthology contributions, etc. Non-peer-reviewed publications: Publications disseminating research findings, etc. Applicants can attach a maximum of 5 publications. The publication dates must be clearly marked on the list. The selected publications must be uploaded as attachments and numbered 1–5. 5. Research plan, consisting of a short description of previous research related to the Dark Ages project, a plan for the employment period (including a description of the planned subproject and of the proposed papers) and a brief outline of career plans beyond the postdoc. 6. Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics. The chosen candidate will be employed and enrol at the Faculty of Humanities under the PhD School at the Faculty of Humanities. The scholarship is for 3 years starting on 1 May 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Dark Ages project The collective research project The Indo-European Dark Ages Illuminated, funded by VELUX FONDEN, aims to reconstruct the cultural vocabulary – words referring to technologies (e.g. the wheel) and socioeconomic phenomena (e.g. dowry) – of the IE “Dark Ages”, the poorly lit period between the dissolution of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) and the emergence of the individual daughter branches. The PhD project The main responsibility of the candidate is to carry out their own PhD project within the wider frame of the overall research project. Moreover, as part of the work tasks included in the PhD programme the candidate is responsible for collecting and curating data from one or more branches in which the candidate has special knowledge. The candidate must draft a preliminary description of a PhD project addressing one or more semantic fields of Indo-European as outlined above. The PhD project should provide a detailed historical account of the relevant lexical items in one or more branch proto-languages of Indo-European (Proto-Italic, Proto-Germanic etc.), including their cultural context. The PhD project should take into account both items inherited from PIE and more recent items present in the branch proto-language, including loan words from known and unknown sources. The PhD project will be carried out under the supervision of project PI Thomas Olander. The candidate is expected to collaborate closely with the other members of the Dark Ages project, to participate in group meetings at the Roots of Europe research centre and to integrate with the research group Language History. The candidate will be invited to co-author papers to the extent that they can be incorporated into the thesis. Applicants are invited to familiarise themselves with the the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics. The PhD Programme PhD studies consist of research programmes at the highest international level that qualify students for independent research, knowledge dissemination and teaching. The main emphasis is on PhD students organising and conducting their own research project (under supervision). The programme culminates in the submission of a PhD thesis, which the student must defend in public. The programme is prescribed to 180 ECTS credits, corresponding to three years of full-time study. A PhD degree opens a range of career opportunities in academia and elsewhere. As well as writing a thesis, PhD students work in active research environments in Denmark and abroad. They contribute to the academic environment, take research training courses, and convey the results of their research in teaching, at academic conferences and to the public. Qualification requirements The candidate must have a high degree of knowledge of historical linguistics and, especially, of Indo-European studies. Candidates with interests and experience in linguistic phylogenetics, database design and/or archaeolinguistics will be prioritised. Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to master’s level related to the subject area of the project e.g. Indo-European Studies. If you have completed your education in Denmark, you must have a master’s degree covered by the collective agreement for academics in the state sector. If you have completed your education outside of Denmark, you must either have a master’s degree equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years) or as minimum a bachelor’s degree equivalent to a Danish bachelor’s degree (three years) and be assessed as having professional qualifications at master's level. If you have completed your education abroad, we will obtain an assessment of your education from the Danish Research Agency. Applicants must possess skills in written and spoken academic English at a high level. Reading proficiency in German is an advantage.
