Københavns Universitet
Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics. The chosen candidate will be employed and enrol at the Faculty of Humanities under the PhD School at the Faculty of Humanities. The scholarship is for 3 years starting on 1 May 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Dark Ages project The collective research project The Indo-European Dark Ages Illuminated, funded by VELUX FONDEN, aims to reconstruct the cultural vocabulary – words referring to technologies (e.g. the wheel) and socioeconomic phenomena (e.g. dowry) – of the IE “Dark Ages”, the poorly lit period between the dissolution of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) and the emergence of the individual daughter branches. The semantic fields treated in the project are (1) clothing and textiles, (2) metals and metal production, (3) animal husbandry, (4) agriculture, (5) foods and utensils, (6) social structure and jurisdiction, (7) religious practices, (8) warfare, (9) transport, (10) economy and commerce, (11) construction and buildings. After compiling a comprehensive database of vocabulary items across the IE branches, the project members carry out a computer-assisted phylogenetic analysis to determine the minimal age of each vocabulary item. Since the vocabulary is indicative of the culture of the speakers of a language, the project will lead to new insights, based on historical linguistic evidence, into the cultural and technological stages and transitions in western Eurasia at the dawn of history. It thus corroborates the thriving cross-pollination between historical linguistics, archaeology and historical population genetics. The PhD project The main responsibility of the candidate is to carry out their own PhD project within the wider frame of the overall research project. Moreover, as part of the work tasks included in the PhD programme the candidate is responsible for collecting and curating data from one or more branches in which the candidate has special knowledge. The candidate must draft a preliminary description of a PhD project addressing one or more semantic fields of Indo-European as outlined above. The PhD project should provide a detailed historical account of the relevant lexical items in one or more branch proto-languages of Indo-European (Proto-Italic, Proto-Germanic etc.), including their cultural context. The PhD project should take into account both items inherited from PIE and more recent items present in the branch proto-language, including loan words from known and unknown sources. The PhD project will be carried out under the supervision of project PI Thomas Olander. The candidate is expected to collaborate closely with the other members of the Dark Ages project, to participate in group meetings at the Roots of Europe research centre and to integrate with the research group Language History. The candidate will be invited to co-author papers to the extent that they can be incorporated into the thesis. Applicants are invited to familiarise themselves with the the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics. The PhD Programme PhD studies consist of research programmes at the highest international level that qualify students for independent research, knowledge dissemination and teaching. The main emphasis is on PhD students organising and conducting their own research project (under supervision). The programme culminates in the submission of a PhD thesis, which the student must defend in public. The programme is prescribed to 180 ECTS credits, corresponding to three years of full-time study. A PhD degree opens a range of career opportunities in academia and elsewhere. As well as writing a thesis, PhD students work in active research environments in Denmark and abroad. They contribute to the academic environment, take research training courses, and convey the results of their research in teaching, at academic conferences and to the public. Qualification requirements The candidate must have a high degree of knowledge of historical linguistics and, especially, of Indo-European studies. Candidates with interests and experience in linguistic phylogenetics, database design and/or archaeolinguistics will be prioritised. Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to master’s level related to the subject area of the project e.g. Indo-European Studies. If you have completed your education in Denmark, you must have a master’s degree covered by the collective agreement for academics in the state sector. If you have completed your education outside of Denmark, you must either have a master’s degree equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years) or as minimum a bachelor’s degree equivalent to a Danish bachelor’s degree (three years) and be assessed as having professional qualifications at master's level. If you have completed your education abroad, we will obtain an assessment of your education from the Danish Research Agency. Applicants must possess skills in written and spoken academic English at a high level. Reading proficiency in German is an advantage. For further information about the guidelines for PhD studies at UCPH, please refer to: https://phd.ku.dk/english/. The Department of Political Science at Aarhus University invites applications for one full-time, three-year postdoctoral position in the ERC Starting Grant project EQUILIBRIUM — Changing for the Better: Escaping Negative Equilibria in State-Citizen Relations — led by Associate Professor Jan P. Vogler. The starting date is 1 August 2026 or 1 September 2026 (with further flexibility based on mutual agreement). The Research Project EQUILIBRIUM investigates how regions can escape vicious cycles in state-citizen relations. In some contexts, poor state performance in the delivery of public goods and services reinforces negative population attitudes, which leads to the election of parties that limit the state’s resources and fewer applicants for public sector jobs, among others. This perpetuates the state’s poor performance, creating a self-reinforcing dynamic. The project examines which factors enable regions to break out of these negative patterns and shift toward more positive equilibria characterized by more favorable citizen attitudes. The project develops new theoretical concepts and empirical measures, using a novel sequential research design that integrates observational data, large-scale public opinion surveys, and inquiries to public administrations. Empirically, the project will collect comprehensive data across five European countries (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Romania) and the United States. Additional information about the project’s content and goals can be found here. The Postdoctoral Position As a postdoctoral researcher you will contribute to the early phases of the project, which involve designing and implementing major data collection efforts. Key responsibilities include: Survey Research: Design and implement two waves of public opinion surveys across all six countries Develop survey items measuring citizens’ experiences with public institutions Design and implement conjoint experiments Manage survey implementation through professional survey firms Inquiries to Public Administrations: Design inquiries to bureaucracies across the selected countries Implement these inquiries and analyze response patterns Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and organize observational data on public service quality Integrate multiple data sources to create comprehensive datasets Conduct quantitative analyses using advanced statistical methods Collaboration and Dissemination: Work closely with the PI and other (future) team members Contribute to research publications in leading international journals Present findings at international conferences Job Description You will: Make major contributions to research design, pre-registration, the process of seeking ethical approval for the research, writing, data collection, analysis, publication, and public outreach Lead and co-author studies on the subject Engage meaningfully with the department’s broader research community; a minimum presence of three days on campus each week is expected Teach the equivalent of one seminar per year, which is approximately 55 hours of classroom teaching and examination per year. The Danish School of Education (DPU) at the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, invites applications for a fixed-term one-year postdoctoral position associated with the project Hybrid text practices in the Danish L1 classroom. Polyphony, coherence and involvement when writing with generative AI, financed by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The project runs for 44 months, beginning in March 2026. The position is full-time (37 hours/week) and begins on 1 March 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Our new colleague will be employed at the Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies, Educational Philosophy, and General Education. The position is based at DPU at either Aarhus campus or Emdrup campus (see the description of DPU below). Since the department is situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the selected applicant should expect some travel activity. The Danish School of Education (DPU) is committed to diversity and encourages all qualified applicants to apply regardless of their personal background. Research context In the project Hybrid text practices in the Danish L1 classroom. Polyphony, coherence and involvement when writing with generative AI, we explore a potentially new broad form of hybrid human–AI writing that also involves navigating artificially generated text. Through a qualitative text and classroom design, we examine writing with generative AI tools in Danish L1 classrooms in Year 7 and 8 from dialogical, sociocultural and social semiotic perspectives. We focus on students’ observable writing processes in terms of strategies and interactions, their texts, and their explicit reflections on these processes and their writing choices. We are particularly interested in how generative AI contributes to or challenges students' involvement in writing, and how it affects the way they orchestrate multiple voices and create coherence in texts – all of which are pivotal for literacy learning. Besides much-needed empirical insights, we expect to enrich the theoretical concepts of polyphony, coherence, and involvement with new dimensions. Postdoctoral position The selected applicant will work in close collaboration with PI Kristine Kabel and the rest of the research team throughout the employment period, including planning and conducting fieldwork, analysing data, disseminating, and arranging advisory board meetings. The two main tasks will be to conduct and write a literature review to identify existing knowledge about lower secondary students' writing processes, texts, and reflections on writerly choices in non-GAI practices, and to carry out a specific work package in the project in collaboration with the entire research team. In this work package, we seek to explore what characterises Year 7 and 8 students’ observable writing strategies and interactions when participating in hybrid text practices with generative AI tools. As part of this work package, the postdoctoral researcher will be expected to conduct fieldwork in three classrooms in collaboration with the researchers in the team, in spring 2026, and autumn/winter 2026-27, and participate in analytical activities and the writing of one article, also as part of a collaborative effort. Teaching and supervision As a postdoctoral researcher, your position is primarily research-based but will also involve a limited amount of teaching and supervision. To that end, the successful applicant will be expected to participate in the department’s teaching and supervision activities and teach and supervise at MA levels and above at the Department of Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies, Educational Philosophy, and General Education.
